Bathroom Flooring Choices

Choosing the right kind of flooring is critical. Bathroom flooring needs to be moisture resistant, durable, and attractive. Common options include:

1. Tile

Tile is the most popular and preferable material for most bathrooms. There are many sizes, shapes, colors, and textures to choose from, including natural stone, porcelain, and ceramic. The style options are endless, allowing you to completely customize your floor. And, tile is durable and completely moisture-resistant.

2. Hardwood

Generally speaking, hardwood floors and moisture are a bad combination. If water penetrates the surface of the floor, the wood can swell, warp, and mold. The same is true of laminate wood flooring. But, don’t count hardwood (or laminate) flooring out just yet. If you are committed to properly maintaining the floor’s finish layer – and wiping up drips – wood flooring is a beautiful, long-lasting option.

3. Engineered Wood

If you are fully committed to having wood floors in your bathroom, engineered wood is a beautiful, durable alternative to hardwood or laminate. Engineered wood is comprised of a hardwood veneer and a solid plywood base. This construction makes the floor resistant to water damage and very stable. However, engineered wood flooring is expensive and can only be refinished once or twice without wearing through the veneer layer.

4. Vinyl

Sheet vinyl flooring has been a popular, inexpensive choice for bathroom flooring for decades. Sheet vinyl is completely impervious to water and cleans up with ease. Tile and plank vinyl flooring are also popular choices as they look and feel more like hardwood or natural stone tile. One of the only downsides of vinyl flooring is that it can bubble or gap over time, if not properly laid.
