When it comes to home improvement projects, you have a lot of decisions to make. At Tom’s Best Quality Remodeling, our design team will take the guesswork out of choosing the right materials for your new space. One question customers frequently ask during bathroom and kitchen remodeling projects is, “Which type of tile is best for my project?” To answer that question, let’s look at the various tile options and their applications.

Bathroom Remodel: Tile

Ceramic and Porcelain Tile

Ceramic tile comes in a variety of colors, shapes, and styles, and varies in price based upon quality. Although it is glazed, ceramic tile is porous and therefore is best for use in kitchens away from high-moisture areas. Porcelain tile is a kind of ceramic tile that has a higher standard of water absorption than other ceramics. Porcelain, therefore, is a great choice for use in bathrooms and other high moisture areas.

Glass Tile

Glass tile is a popular choice for kitchen and bathroom backsplashes because of its bright and shiny appearance. Because it cracks under pressure, glass tile is only suitable for use on vertical surfaces. Many customers like to use glass tile as an accent in ceramic and porcelain backsplashes to create a pop of color and shine.

Quarry Tile

For high traffic areas and outdoor spaces, we recommend quarry tile. Quarry tile is extremely hard and has a rough, natural-looking surface. While quarry tile is a great flooring choice for foyers, hallways, and patios, it is not appropriate for kitchen surfaces. This tile is very porous, making it more susceptible to stains from acidic foods and less hygienic than other non-porous products like quartz.

Stone Tile

Natural stone is always a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms because of its elegant appeal. Granite and marble are popular choices for flooring because of their variegated colors and textures. While these products are beautiful, they are susceptible to scratches and stains if not properly sealed and polished. Natural stone tiles are also cold, so we advise our customers to install in-floor radiant heat prior to laying their floors.
